FORMULA
EUROPE
AUTUMN RACE
REPORT

After a short break during the summer holiday, the Formula Europe Team riders
jumped back on their bikes to go on BMX racing.
For Lucie Meerholz, the National Top Competition was the first big race after
her collarbone injury. To make it more challenging for her, she was racing an
age group higher. After a good semi, she had to settle for 8th place after a bad
gate in the main. Still she was stoked with that result against some really
though competition. Next races for Lucie are 2 more rounds in the Dutch Top
Competition.
Junior Men’s Bastien Merle has moved back to the French Training Centre in Aix
to pick up training. There he’s preparing for his debut in the World Cup
Supercross in Frejus, where he will have to battle against the big boys in
Elite. His goal is to enter the big race by qualifying in the time trial.
Sandra Aleksejeva had a good after season. She won both Baltic Cup and National
Championship Series against some nice competition from Latvia and Russia.
The Final Round of the Championship Series was held at the famous Talava BMX
Track in Valmiera, where she took her first National Champion Title as a Rookie
in Elite Women with 5 wins out of 5 races!
Edzus Treimanis is getting back in shape after a wrist injury. After some small
surgery and 4 weeks out of racing, he restarted training. Even though he wasn’t
a 100% in shape, he managed to qualify for the 1/8finals of the World Cup in
Chula Vista (USA) in which he was eliminated.
Kevin Sprengers is training again after his shoulder surgery and will be racing
by the end of this year. He is eager to come back stronger and better.
In the Belgian National Top Competition, Nico van Dartel has moved up into 1st
place of the Master 30+ Ranking. He was behind in the ranking after missing 2
rounds in the beginning of season, but with a second place and 5wins in a row,
he moved into the lead. Things are looking good for him with only 1 more round
to go.

Formula Europe KLATOVY
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUNDS 9 & 10

Rounds 9 &
10 of the
European
Championships
Series BMX
were held in
Klatovy,
Czech
Republic.
The rain had
transformed
the track
into a big
mud pool
making the
races
though. But
this didn¹t
keep our
Formula
Europe
riders from
giving their
best.
In Junior
Men, Bastien
Merle was
eliminated
on Saturday
in the
quarters,
but on
Sunday he
made it all
the way to
the main
event in
which he
just missed
out on the
podium with
a 4th place.
Sandra
Aleksejeva,
Rookie in
the Elite
Women
Category,
lacked some
power on the
heavy track
against the
more
powerfull
riders in
her
category.
However on
Saturday,
she managed
to qualify
for the main
in which she
took 6th
place. On
Sunday, she
was
eliminated
in the motos.
Kevin
Sprengers
was racing
his last
race before
getting a
shoulder
surgery that
will keep
him of his
bike the
rest of this
season.
Kevin was
eliminated
in the
quarters on
both days.
Kevin ends
his season
in 10th
place of the
European
Elite Men
Ranking.
We wish him
all the best
with his
surgery and
speedy
recovery. We
are looking
forward to
see him back
on his
Formula bike
next season.
Our other
Elite Men
Rider Edzus
Treimanis
successfully
defended his
4th place in
the ranking
this
weekend.
On Saturday,
he missed
the cut in
the quarters
with a 5th
place
finish. On
Sunday,
Edzus
qualified
for the main
event. With
a great move
in the first
turn, he
went from
5th place
into the
lead and
kept his
position
till the
finish line.
Edzus was
stoked with
his victory
and said
he¹s ready
for the
final rounds
in Sandness
(Norway) in
3 weeks.

Formula Europe VALKENSWAARD
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUNDS 7 & 8

June 5&6,
Rounds 7 and
8 of the
European
Championship
were held on
the 2004
Worlds Track
in
Valkenswaard
(Holland).
The entire
Formula Team
was present,
but Lucie
Meerholz was
still out of
competition.
She will be
back on her
BMX bike in
a few weeks.
In Junior
Men, Bastien
Merle was
representing
the French
National
Team.
Saturday he
put in some
good laps in
the motos,
passed 1/8th
and 1/4th to
find his way
to the
semis. He
didn¹t have
a good gate,
but managed
to fight his
way back to
the front
making a
move for 4th
and
qualifying
position
when he skid
in turn #3
and race
this was
over.
On Sunday he
made it all
the way to
the main in
which he was
held up in
the first
turn by a
crash and
finished in
7th place.
After 8
rounds,
Bastien
enters the
Top 10 of
the European
Ranking.
Latvian
Elite
Women¹s
Rookie
Sandra
Aleksejeva,
has some
really
strong laps
on Saturday
beating some
of the big
names in the
strong Elite
Women
Category.
She
qualified
for the main
event in
which she
was battling
for a top 4
spot when
she
unclipped
and was
pushed back
to 6th
place.
On Sunday
she had an
off day and
didn¹t make
it out of
the motos.
Sandra is
currently
ranked #14.
Although
Kevin
Sprengers
was riding
with an
injury, he
was still
taking
strong gates
and making
top
finishes.
Saturday he
made it to
the semis he
missed the
gate and
didn¹t make
the cut. On
Sunday he
was out in
the quarters
after he hit
the back
tire of the
leader and
lost all
speed.
After 8
rounds Kevin
is in 10th
place of the
European
Elite Men
Ranking.
Our other
Elite Men
Rider, Edzus
Treimanis,
made it
comfortably
to the semis
on both
days. On
Saturday, he
was in
qualifying
position but
was passed
when he went
a bit too
wide in the
last turns
and on
Sunday he
crashed on
the rhythm
section
while racing
in the 3rd
spot.
After this
weekend,
Edzus is
ranked 4th.
Nico van
Dartel had
an off
weekend. He
was
eliminated
in the motos
on Saturday,
but with a
little luck
in Sunday¹s
semi, he
qualified
for the main
in which he
had to
settle for
8th place.
Next Rounds
will be held
in Klatovy
(Czech
Republic) in
2 weeks.

VENTSPILS RACE REPORT

May 15 & 16
Formula
Europe's
Edzus
Treimanis
was racing
in Ventspils.
The Track is
really nice
and even has
a SX kinda
jump over a
turn on the
first
straight.
Weather
conditions
weren't
great, but
Racing was!
In
Saturday¹s
Pro Open
Race, he was
fastest in
the Time
Trial. Top
16 riders
qualified
for the
semi-final
motos. Edzus
won his
semis and
went on to
holeshot in
the main and
lead from
start to
finish.
He was the
strongest
rider again
on Sunday,
taking the
win in the
first round
of the
Latvian
National
Series.

MAY
RACE REPORT
Beginning of
May, the
Euro Team
travelled to
Perugia
(Italy) for
Rounds 3&4
of the
European
Championships
Series,
except for
Lucie
Meerholz.
She broke
her
collarbone
during the
second
National
Race in
Heiloo. We
wish her a
speedy
recovery and
hope to see
her back on
her bike
soon.
The Formula
Europe Team
was racing
their brand
new Race Kit
with a new
jersey
design and
Royal SP247
Race Pants.
The Perugia
track was
very
technical,
even a bit
dangerous
and causing
a lot of
casualties.
In Junior
Men, Bastien
Merle was
putting in
some good
motos
earning
points for
the ranking.
He qualified
easily for
the main on
Saturday in
which he was
in 4th
position
when he
cased the
first double
of the Pro
Section and
lost his
speed. He
crossed the
finish line
in 7th
place. On
Sunday he
looked like
he was going
to repeat
his
performance,
but stranded
in the
semis.
Bastien is
in 10th
place of the
Junior Men
Ranking
after 4
rounds.
Sandra
Aleksejeva,
Rookie in
Elite Women,
had an
impressive
weekend. She
managed to
pass some
really
though motos
against some
of the
World‚s more
experienced
top riders.
With some
really nice
moves in the
semis on
both days,
she
qualified
for the
main. On
Saturday she
had to
settle for
7th place,
but on
Sunday, she
passed
several
riders with
some amazing
turns
putting her
in 3rd
position
after turn
number 3.
She lost
some track
speed and
was passed
by 1 rider.
Sandra
managed to
hang on till
the finish
giving her
4th place
for the day.
In Elite
Men, Kevin
Sprengers
and Edzus
Treimanis
were
representing
the Formula
Colors.
Kevin was
looking good
and
finishing
his motos
out in
front. He
passed the
1/4th finals
on Saturday
in which he
got in
contact with
another
rider on the
Pro Section
and was
pushed back
and his
racing day
was over. He
made it up
on Sunday,
fighting it
all the way
to the
final. He
was up in
the mix in
the main. He
was in 4th
position
turning on
the flat
going into
the Pro
Section
barely
having
enough speed
to jump. He
fought to
hang into
his spot but
had to
settle for
7th. Kevin
is now in
12th place
of the Elite
Ranking.
Edzus
Treimanis
had a good
weekend. He
was 1 of the
fastest guys
on the
track. With
his gates
improving,
he was
definitely 1
of the men
to beat.
Edzus
qualified
for the
mains both
days.
Saturday he
finished in
4th missing
the podium
by a few
inches,
Sunday he
finished in
close
second.
Edzus moves
up to 3rd
place in the
Elite Men
Ranking.
Next stop
event for
our Elite
Riders was
the World
Cup in
Copenhagen
the weekend
after. The
Copenhagen
BMX Venue
was in
perfect
shape but
the weather
was a bit of
a spoiler.
Sandra was
looking good
in practice
but the side
wind on the
first double
blew her of
balance and
the SX event
was over
before it
began. In
Friday’s
Time Trial,
Kevin took
first run
66th in the
second run
and in the
second run
he landed
sideways on
the big
triple into
the first
turn and
went down.
Edzus didn’t
have a good
first run
and had to
wait to
qualify in
the second
run. He
managed to
finish with
the top 64
and
qualified
for racing
day.
On Saturday
the wind was
a lot less
and Edzus
was ready
for his
race. He got
drawn in a
pretty
stacked 1/8
final, but
after some
finishes in
the top
three he
managed to
get through
to the 1/4
final. With
the 7th gate
pick there
was no place
for mistakes
if he wanted
to qualify
to the
semis.
Things went
his way and
he took 4th
place on the
second
straight and
kept it save
to the
finish. In
the semi
final, after
a pretty bad
gate Edzus
got stuck in
traffic in
the first
turn. In the
rest of the
track he
managed to
pass some
riders and
with a nice
high-low in
the last
turn he
passed last
years SX
overall
winner Sam
Willoughby
to strand in
5th place,
just 1 place
away from a
spot in the
final. Most
important
for him, he
earned some
points in
the first
race of the
2012 Olympic
games
qualification
period.
Upcoming
race for our
team are the
European
Championships
Rounds in
Weiterstadt,
Germany.

Bo Jung (formerly Alice Jung) has just announced her return to
BMX and will be riding, and representing Formula BMX.
1. What have you been doing for the last few years that has kept you away from BMX? ..... Bo-Well, I retired in 2005 because I wanted to go back and finish school. I have almost all of my bachelor's degree in Kinesiology but I wanted to get into nursing school first. It took me a few years to get into a RN program because everything is impacted and I had a couple prerequisites I needed to finish so right now I am in my second semester of the RN program at Los Angeles Harbor College. I have about a year left and then I will go back to finish my bachelors.
2. What made you decide to return at this point in time? ..... Bo-I never lost the love for racing. I was very, very burned out when I left however but I knew that it was still in my heart. I've tried other things--surfing, boxing, just working out--but nothing feels like when I'm riding my BMX bike and jumping big jumps lol. A couple months ago someone on my Facebook suggested I start racing...It planted a little seed...then a friend asked me to show him a YouTube video of BMX and when I showed him, it was pretty much over. I was on the phone trying to get a bike the next day. I'm looking forward to having some fun!
3. For all the new riders to the sport of BMX, can you give us a brief resume of your accomplishments in BMX before you took some time off? ..... I guess my biggest accomplishments were winning the National number one title in women's pro in 2001 and 2002.
4. You look like you are in pretty good shape, have you been working out, training, riding, and do you think you are ready? ..... Well, I enjoy exercise and sports regardless of BMX so I've never really stopped working out or staying active. I haven't really lifted heavy or trained "BMX style" in a long time but I know it will all come back. I haven't been riding at all--basically 5 years completely off a BMX bike so that's a bit strange but I'm not afraid really....I'm not sure what will happen but I am ready to have fun and ride again.
5. When will you be making your debut back to racing? ..... My first race back will be the ABA national in New Mexico at the end of May.
6. Will you be racing ABA, NBL, UCI? ..... I will be racing ABA to start and I hope to do UCI races as well.
7. What is your ultimate goal upon your return?..... My ultimate goal is always to have fun and enjoy myself. In the past, I made the mistake of getting too serious about winning all the time and pressuring myself too much. It made it very difficult to have fun and it showed in my results. I plan on training and doing my best and just seeing what happens but regardless, I intend to have a good time.
8. You obviously have had a name change. Any particular reason for switching? ..... It's kind of a weird story...My legal name is Bohyung Jung (and yes, you do pronounce the 'h' LOL). When my family moved to the US when I was a baby, my parents gave me an American name--Alice. I always disliked my name but I didn't bother to change it. About 2 years ago I decided to move to California and at some point during the move I lost my social security card. When I went to get a new one the man at the social security office told me Alice was not a legal name and that I was not supposed to be using it as my legal name. Since I always hated "Alice" being my name, I decided that I would return to Cali with a new name...well, an old name....Bohyung--Bo for short. I prefer it over Alice but I know some people will call me, Alice, forever which is all right I suppose..LOL.
9. Anything else you would like to add or anyone you would like to thank? ..... I would like to thank Bruce Mayer at Formula for giving me a spot on the team in my old age and for helping me get my bike together, my friend Carley Young and her brother, Bill, who sent me a bunch of parts for my birthday on April 23rd, Black Book Sessions (branch of Hybrid Apparel) for hooking me up with some cool clothes, my adopted dad, John, for supporting my decision to race, and all my friends who believe in me and have believed in me all of these years. Of course, thanks to Jerry Landrum for the hook up with Bruce and this cool interview and for being one of the coolest BMX old dudes ever! LOL |
Formula
Says
Goodbye
to
Shelby
“The
Rabbit”
Stacy
With
Best
Wishes

Well the
time has
come for
Shelby to
spread her
wings.
Shelby just
had her 16th
birthday and
after 7
years of
working
with, and
supporting,
Shelby, we
finally part
ways for her
to pursue
the next
level in
BMX. Shelby
was with me
when I had
ATI, she was
with me when
I started
Action
Sports Depot
and later
moved to the
Formula team
with me
about 2
years ago.
She has been
an integral
part of this
team, and
all the
teams, and a
leader and
mentor to
some of the
younger
riders
coming up.
Shelby
has always
had drive
and
determination
to get
better,
faster,
smoother,
jump well
and be the
best she
could in
whatever
class she
was riding.
She has been
all over the
world,
competed
against
girls that
were taller,
stronger and
older and
she has
always
proven that
she could
compete at
any level.
I have
watched
Shelby grow
from a
little girl
loving to
ride, and
hating to
not be 1st,
to a
determined,
young women,
loving to
ride, and
still hating
to not be
1st. This
attitude got
her to a
point where
about 6
months ago
she put
herself on a
grueling
training
program
which
included
weight
training,
cardio,
proper diet,
sprints,
along with
home study,
to push
herself to
the next
level.
Shelby has
become like
another
daughter to
me and my
family over
the years
and I have
become part
of her
family as
well, but,
as I have
told her and
other
members of
our team, if
they have
the
opportunity
to grow and
get further
support in
the sport,
than I can
provide, I
will support
their
decision to
move on.
Shelby
has always
represented
our team
well giving
us 110%
every time
she gets in
the gate,
and she has
been a good
ambassador
to the sport
for us as
well. In
early April,
Shelby,
along with twenty
aspiring
riders, ages
15 and 16,
attended the
third 2010
USA Cycling
Junior
Development
Program
(JDP) camp
which was
held at the
Olympic
Training
Center in
Chula Vista,
Calif. The
goal of
these JDP
camps is to
bridge the
gap between
traditional
BMX racing
and the
Supercross
style found
at World
Cups and the
Olympic
Games.
It was at
this camp
that Shelby,
along with 3
other
riders, two
of which are
Jessie Day
and Nick
Kohler,
were
recruited to
ride the new
Speed frames
and in turn
receive
support for
the rest of
2010 for
ABA, NBL and
Supercross
races.
I, we, wish
Shelby the
best of luck
in the
future, she
will always
have a home
at Formula,
and she will
be missed.

Formula
Europe 2010
Crown
International
BMX
Competition

Formula Europe's Edzus Treimanis and Kevin Sprengers travelled to Seoul, South-Korea for the Crown Haitai International, the first BMX race ever organized in Korea.
The track was a bit unconventional with small pointy jumps, glued sand, that looked like concrete, and a very steep starting hill.
But as usually in Asia, the organizer did a perfect job on the organization. The track was dressed up nicely, the riders were pampered and the event was made into 1 big show.
On Friday a Time Trial was held. The laps were timed with 2 chronometers and an average was taken to determine the seedings in Saturday's race.
Edzus finished in 5th and Kevin in 7th place.
Saturday's Race Day started with an official opening for spectators and sponsors. After this the riders were presented to the public and then it was race time.
Both Edzus and Kevin made it through the Main Event in which Kevin finished in 5th place and Edzus made the podium with a solid 3rd behind Raymon van der Biezen and Olympic Gold Medal Maris Strombergs.
After the Award Ceremony, in which the riders got a nice big check, the event was closed with a nice diner and a performance of a Korean Pop Singer and a traditional band.
The event was a great experience! We thank the organizer and wish Korea all the best for their future in BMX.

Upon
arrival at the Grands we were presented
an envelope from the ABA informing us
that we had been selected, by the vote
of the BMX community, to be in the top
five selected for bike of the year for
the Golden Crank awards. Although we did
not receive the honor this year we
appreciate, and thank, all those who
voted for us, and we thank the riders
that represented Formula this year and
brought more focus to our frame's
popularity.
The
Grands race kicks off today, Saturday,
and Formula has entered a Factory team
sheet that looks pretty good to be
competitive.
This
year we outfitted our team with new gear
for the Grands that will be our team
uniform for the 2010 season. We are
running the Fly Kinetic Helmet, pants
and gloves in Red/Black and we matched
our new jerseys to the Kinetic gear.

Formula Europe¹s Steven Wong
wins the Asian Championship
 Last
weekend the Asian Championships were
held on the brand new BMX track in Hong
Kong. UCI track builder Tom Ritz was
hired by the Hong Kong Cycling
Association to build the first
professional BMX track ever in Hong
Kong.
Steven almost broke his ankle 2 weeks
ago, so he didn't have the best
preparation for this race. But that
didn't stop him! After winning his motos
and semi, Steven took the hole shot in
the main and lead from start to finish
to take his 4th successive Asian Title.
This
victory was special for Steven as it was
the first BMX event in Hong Kong and a
lot of his friends and family were there
to see him dominate the race.
